Today is labor day, and thinking of all of the men and women in the U.S. who work to make a living makes me almost desperate to see Welch in Congress.
Every year when I do my federal personal and business taxes, I wind up thinking, "this tax code must have been written by a bunch of rich people." The wealthier you are, the more deductions there are.
There are a lot of economic arguments I could make here in favor of labor, higher minimum wages, unions, etc. But the situation has gotten so bad that, unlike most issues, I won't argue on an economic basis. The republicans in Congress are simply in the territory of being morally wrong when it comes to labor and distribution of wealth. It has gone beyond economics. It is a moral issue now.
Welch will be an amazing friend to labor, and I think he understands that this issue connects with many people in Vermont on a gut level.
