One of the most interesting things to date about the Welch / Rainville campaign is that Rainville refuses to debate Welch in public. She claims she can't while running in the Republican primary. Interestingly, her Republican opponent, Mark Shepard, has managed to show up.
Rainville keeps saying that she wants to run a campaign based on the issues, and an open conversation with Vermonters, yet she wouldn't even attend these "debates on the green." Vermont is not a big media market - sometimes the only way to reach constituents is the old fashioned way - in person.
It's pretty much established that Rainville is a chicken candidate, petrified that emerging from her campaign bunker will allow Welch to tie her to Bush. Which he'll do in a second.
